FORT MYERS, Fla. (Jan. 27, 2025) – Sanibel Captiva Community Bank has donated $25,000 to Community Housing and Resources’ capital campaign, A New Riverview. The goal is to raise enough funds to build a new affordable housing facility at 1517 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel to replace the former Riverview building destroyed by Hurricane Ian.
The planned housing facility is comprised of a single, three-story building with fifteen conventional one-bedroom/one-bathroom apartments. The building is designed to house low-to-moderate-income workers employed by Sanibel-based businesses and older adults. All units will meet standards for ADA compliance, storm resilience and Florida Green Building guidelines.
Community Housing and Resources (CHR) was formed in 1979 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to address the growing need for affordable housing in the Sanibel and Captiva area. CHR also serves as the City of Sanibel’s housing foundation under the Affordable Housing Program established in 1983. CHR owns 76 affordable housing units at various locations, including 65 rental properties — one of which is a 12-unit complex for senior residents — and 10 Limited Equity Ownership (LEO) homes through the Coast and Islands Community Land Trust.
